This years winners (left to right): Jori Leszczynski (President Elect of the AALAS Mile High Branch) of National Jewish Health accepts on behalf of Carrie Grace for the "Best Individual Initiative". During 2008 Carrie contributed to a "Greener" facility by developing a new rotation system for changing cages at National Jewish that decreased the number of cages and accessories that needed to be processed, both reducing labor and utility usage. She also developed a new system for caging that is supplied to investigators that also decreased waste. Finally, she began a recycling program in the BRC that has helped to reduce waste going into dumpsters. Overall, Carrie's superviors estimate that her initiative not only reduced waste and labor, but will ultimately save the institution between $10,000 and $20,000 this fiscal year. This example shows how one person can make a big difference. Danielle Donahue & Brenda A. Klaunberg of The National Institutes of Health, Mouse Imaging Facility for the "Best Facility Initiative" for their use of multiple initiatives to decrease waste and energy use. This facility started a recycling program, strategically turned off lights, and invested in Innovive's caging system; drastically reducing their water usage. Brian Anderson of Innovive for the "Best New Product or System" disposable cage which is recycable and decreases water and energy needs in a facility by eliminating or significantly reducing the use of cage wash facilities.
