Ron E. Banks, DVM, DACLAM, DACVPM
Director, Office of Animal Welfare Assurance for Duke University & Medical Center

Dr. Banks received his Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from Auburn University. He is Board Certified with the American College of Veterinary Preventive Medicine and the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine, and a Colonel in the Veterinary Corps for the United States Army Reserve.

His many honors and leadership responsibilities include serving as a member of the Council on Accreditation for our accrediting organization, the Association for the Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care, International (AAALAC), President of the Academy of Surgical Research, and Chairman, Scientific Advisory Committee, AALAS.

As Director of the Office of Animal Welfare Assurance, at Duke University – one of the top 5 research institutions in the nation - Dr. Banks has responsibility for daily operation of the oversight and management of the program for animal care and use; to include IACUC administrative support, compliance monitoring, investigator training, and assistance in protocol development and design. With over 30 publications and many more scientific and professional seminar and scientific presentations, Dr. Banks brings an abundance of experience and dedication to progressive animal use and animal welfare.

Registered Architect, with Perkins + Will, with 12 years of experience in the architectural field. Practice is focused on planning, design and construction administration of animal facilities. His work comprehends projects for higher education and private research institutions nationwide. Perkins + Will is an architectural firm with the highest number of LEED* accredited professionals. Perkins + Will is a member of the US Green Building Council.






Steven Tierney

Steve graduated from the University of Denver and joined his father's business, Certex Company, 32 years ago. Certex is still active and profitable after 55 years. It spawned Certex Electric Vehicles - (Corbin Sparrow, Scooters and Bikes); CertiSoft Solutions (first windows based ACH payment processing software - sold to Bottomline Technologies); Certex ACH, LLC (electronic payment processing - sold to EComm Group). Currently Steve is President of Certex Co, and CEO of Animal Care Systems.

Nonprofit experience includes terms as President of the Parish Council for St. Mary's School (Littleton) and President of the Board of Directors for Boys Hope Girls Hope of Colorado. An avid cyclist, Steve regularly rides the MS 150. He is delighted to be joined by other industry leaders to promote resource conservation through The Green Vivaruim Foundation.

Jennifer Browne, AIA, LEED® AP

Jennifer Browne has over 30 years of architectural and laboratory planning experience. She has completed the design, laboratory planning, construction documentation and construction administration phases of numerous research and higher educational facilities. Jennifer has worked on laboratories with BSL-2, 3, 3-enhanced and 3Ag with limited exposure to BSL-4 containment facilities. Her animal facility experience includes a range of types and sizes of species including nonhuman primates.




*LEED Professional Accreditation distinguishes building professionals with the knowledge and skills to successfully steward the LEED certification process. LEED Accredited Professionals (LEED APs) have demonstrated a thorough understanding of green building practices and principles and the LEED Rating System. More than 43,000 people have earned the credential since the Professional Accreditation program was launched in 2001.

In 2008, administration of the Professional Accreditation program transitioned to the Green Building Certification Institute (GBCI). The Green Building Certification Institute, established with the support of the U.S. Green Building Council, handles exam development and delivery to allow for objective, balanced management of the credentialing program.
