Welcome to the Green Vivarium Web Site

Our website will serve as a valuable industry resource designed to raise awareness, educate and provide a forum for discussion related to energy savings in the vivarium industry. Links to useful websites, energy saving tips, industry news and other information will continue to be added as our foundation grows. We welcome your input; and encourage your involvement as we raise awareness and create resource tools that help our industry achieve a better balance between energy consumption and research efficacy.

The Green Vivarium Foundation welcomes a new ‘Emerald’ sponsor!

A great idea from the University of Nebraska

The University of Nebraska, Lincoln is reducing waste – and making money – by composting animal waste. For the second season, Animal Science employees are converting horse apples, poultry poop and small animal excrement into a natural fertilizer and selling it to area gardeners. The reconditioned poo is flying out the door faster than it can be bagged. Read more in the Scarlet about this innovative program that is reducing waste as well as the University’s carbon footprint.

Did you know the average vivarium consumes five to ten times the energy of a typical office buildng?

Most existing labs can reduce their energy use by more than 30% with just a few simple changes. Contact The Green Vivarium Foundation for more information.

Our Goals:
1) To support efforts to lower the vivarium industry's impact on the environment, reducing our carbon footprint.

2) Promote practices that provide a secure, 'friendly' environment for animals and their caregivers.

3) Encourage and recognize green initiatives of laboratory animal vivarium (LAV) buildings and operations.

The Green Vivarium Foundation welcomes a new sponsor!

Thank you, Allentown, for demonstrating your commitment to greening up the lab animal vivarium industry by sponsoring the Foundation. Check out Allentown's sponsorship posting on our Sponsors page.

Demand-based Control of Lab Air Change Rates

Sharp, Chairman of Aircuity, Inc., states ‘Achieving the safe reduction or variation of air change rates in labs and vivariums can represent the greatest single approach for reducing their energy consumption and carbon footprint.' Read more about safely reducing and controlling air change rates in labs and vivariums.
